Starting next month, specifically from 19 April, the Circle in the Square Theatre, the award-winning musical «Fun Home» whose main character is openly lesbian will open.
According to The Digital Spy, the musical is based on the graphic memoir «Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic» by Alison Bechdel. It revolves around Bechdel's dysfunctional family and relationship with her late father, who as a closeted gay man who ran a funeral home.
The book was adapted into songs by Lisa Kron on music by Jeanine Tesori.
«It is the first lesbian lead character in the history of musical theater and that is a story that needs to be told,» director Sam Gold told Reuters. «It feels like a very good time in our culture to give voice to that character.»
This character will be played by several people. Emily Skeggs and Sydney Lucas will play young versions of the character while Beth Malone will play the adult version.
