The challenge was launched by a gay man to whom one has refused a marriage license on the grounds that marriage is limited to opposite-sex couples.
"The original text of the marriage law does not say one man and one woman, but a husband and a wife. I personally believe that this term refers not only to heterosexual couples but also to same-sex couples, to gay men and lesbians. The law is not discriminatory," the man told the Global Times.
He then filed a complaint and the court agreed to hear his case. That is the first challenge of its kind in China. We look forward to the trial begins this Thursday, January 28th.
