A Challenge To Get Marriage Equality Was Launched In Georgia

A Gregorian lawyer launched a challenge before the Constitutional Court to legalize marriage equality in Georgia.

Giorgi Tatishvili rightly considers that the marriage law, which is defined as a union between a man and a woman, is unconstitutional.

That won't be easy. Georgia is a very homophobic country, particularly because of the influence of the Orthodox Church. A few years ago, a crowd led by Orthodox priests had attacked participants of an LGBT gathering. Giorgi has asked for police protection for safety.

The pressure is so important  that even the group that advocate for human rights have decided to keep their distance for fear of reprisals that could lead to further marginalization of the LGBT community in Georgia.

"In an environment where LGBT groups are virtually banished from the public spaceā€¦ it is all but science fiction to speak about gay marriage and request the constitutional court to weigh in on it," said Lasha Kavtaradze, spokesperson for the Human Rights Education and Monitoring Centre.

I personally prefer to see someone who has the courage to try.
