An Indiana Lawmaker Threatens Transgender People With Prison

Written by

A lawmaker in Indiana threatens to launch a national debate on trans rights after introducing a bill that would ban their access to public bathrooms and locker rooms for not complying with their birth sex.

"We've walked through a doorway we'll never go back through. And we're going to have to address some concerns that are now facing us," Republican Senator Jim Tomes and promoter of the bill said. "If you were born a man, then you are obliged to use the males' restroom."

He therefore proposes that any person not respecting this to be sentenced to a year in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.

This legislation concerns public bathrooms and locker rooms but Tomes would like that the measure is also implemented in public schools even if it goes against federal education mandates as stated Camilla Taylor from the LGBT advocacy group "Lambda Legal."

The U.S. Justice Department has indeed said in July that transgender students could use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity.

Liberty Indiana, a pro-LGBT group, also described this bill as a "scare tactic" intended to "promote fear over reality" after the Conservatives promoted their bill arguing that predators would go into women's restrooms to touch girls.
